Atletico Madrid face Marseille in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening after beating Arsenal to end Arsene Wenger’s hopes of a dream ending to his 22-year reign at the Emirates Stadium. They clash with Marseille, who survived a late scare against Red Bull Salzburg in their semi final; this will be a meeting of arguably the best defence in Europe and one the most potent attacks in the competition. Atleti have become universally feared under Diego Simeone over the years and, having reached two Champions League finals in five seasons, they are expected to win this game. Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa carry a threat in attack, too. Florian Thauvin and Dimitri Payet have been in excellent form, though, so Rudi Garcia’s men cannot be ruled out.
But, after years of being the European bridesmaids, Atleti, who won the competition under Simeone in 2012, will be desperate to win the crown to make up for a poor season in this season’s Champions League, which saw them knocked out at the group stage. It will be tight, but we expect them to get the job done in the end.
Atleti are not just in this final, but they are also on the verge of finishing above Real Madrid in La Liga, with just one defeat in their last six games.
Marseille are in the race for Champions League qualification but slipped up after a 3-3 draw with Guingamp at the weekend.
Kostas Mitroglou and semi final hero Rolando are set to miss the game with respective achilles and calf injuries.
Atletico will be missing midfielder Vitolo for the game on Wednesday.
