Liverpool and Roma clash in the Champions League semi finals, and in reality both sides have probably exceeded their expectations for their performance in the competition. Neither were put down as potential winners, but they have shown tactical awareness and bravery; they both fully deserve to be where they are having knocked out two tournament favourites in the quarter finals. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool proved so many people wrong by demolishing Manchester City 5-1 over two legs, while the Giallorossi completed a great modern day comeback against Barcelona. The nature of those results suggests Liverpool will be favourites here, but Roma will also have been pleased to avoid more experienced European sides in Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Neither side can take anything for granted, though.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Liverpool’s win over City was it showed their development as the season has gone on. Many expected them to crumble defensively in the second leg, even though they had a 3-0 lead. But after Gabriel Jesus gave Pep Guardiola’s side the lead after a minute, they picked themselves up, dusted themselves down and turned the game around. Roma cannot be taken lightly, but Liverpool will look to open a lead with the first leg at Anfield. We think they can do that.

Form

Liverpool come into this game frustrated after losing a 2-0 lead at bottom club West Brom last weekend, but they are very much in the race for Champions League football next season, having not lost in eight games in all competitions.
Roma, meanwhile, are looking good for a top four finish in Italy, too, having coasted past SPAL with a 3-0 win on Saturday.

Team News

Liverpool will be without Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Joel Matip for this game, while Gregoire Defrel will be missing for Roma.
