Fans of the Premier League everywhere are both disappointed and intrigued by the prospect of Liverpool and Manchester City clashing in the Champions League quarter-finals. There was a genuine hope that both would reach the last four, but that dream has been ended; all that is left is to enjoy what could be the most pulsating and exciting tie of the round. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have lost just four times in all competitions this season, including in the last round to FC Basel, but crucially the only team to beat them in the Premier League this term are Liverpool. That victory at Anfield came in January, and will give Jurgen Klopp’s side genuine hope that they can repeat their heroics again at the same venue. Traditionally, playing at home first is seen as a disadvantage because of the away goals rule, but because the Reds start games at such a ferocious tempo that it could actually suit them.
But City are favourites and rightly so; it is hard to see them losing over two legs and while pragmatism is a word that does not feature in Guardiola’s dictionary, he will be confident of a win if his team can stay in the game heading to the Etihad Stadium. We think it will be honours even on Merseyside, but goals are almost guaranteed.
Manchester City are, at the time of writing, just two Premier League wins from the title but they did lose 2-1 to Basel in the Champions League last 16.
Mohamed Salah inspired Liverpool to a stunning 5-0 win over Watford last time out, but they also flattered to deceive at home to Porto in the last round of the Champions League having already won 5-0 in Portugal.
Nathaniel Clyne could be set to make his Liverpool comeback, but Joe Gomez is a serious doubt for the Reds.
Sergio Aguero will return after a knee injury for Manchester City.
