Uruguay vs Russia preview, betting tips and prediction
Russia to Win @ 2/1 with Coral
It could be said that Russia have defied expectations by qualifying for the last 16 of their World Cup. But that wouldn’t quite sum up how impressively they’ve started off this tournament. Two games in, they have eight goals under their belts. Sure, five of those were against a dire Saudi Arabia side but another three came against a okay Egyptian team. Now they face their biggest test in the form of Uruguay, a battle to see who tops the group.
Russia have played with purpose and attached with verve. Uruguay are better-bolstered than their Eastern European counterparts but have been middling up until this point. In fact, their performance in the 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia was embarrassing and should go down as one of the worst in the country’s competitive history. Saudi Arabia were there for the taking. At times shapeless, attackers of the calibre of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani should be scoring goals for fun against them. Instead, they played with fear. Suarez has been particularly awful. They’re through to the knockout round but will surely crash out there.
Russia had been poor in the build-up to the tournament but have been superb since it kicked off. Things have really clicked and perhaps it’s the pressure, or rather, the sense of occasion that has them charging down sides. They have shown that they can attack. It’s their defence that arouses suspicion. If Uruguay play with panache, this could be its first real test.
The aforementioned 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia was truly terrible. If there is a worse game of football at this World Cup then God help us all. They were incredibly out of sorts and, judging by their reluctance to attack after their goal, they appeared to know it too. If they put in a similar shift against Russia or whoever awaits them at the next stage, a hiding awaits.
