Iran vs Spain preview, betting tips and prediction
Diego Costa to score first @ 11/4 with Betfred
Spain will be looking to pick up their first win of Russia 2018 when they face surprise group leaders Iran in Kazan. La Roja played out the most entertaining game of the tournament so far when they were held 3-3 by a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Portugal. With no world class talent to drag Iran by the scruff of the neck in the same manner, we see Spain cruising to victory here.
An uncharacteristic mistake from David De Gea played a major part in Spain not securing a win. This time around they’ll be unkind to their opponents and covetous with the ball. There were doubts about Diego Costa’s suitability within Spain’s system before the tournament. He went some way to shutting up his doubters with two goals and an all-round imposing shift against Portugal. We wouldn’t be surprised to see him get on the scoresheet again here.
Portugal are a good match for Spain. The pair have a recent history of hotly-contested clashes. Yet if it wasn’t for individual errors, you get the feeling that Spain would have come out on top in their group opener. Portugal battled well in midfield and this combativeness stopped La Roja from getting the game in a headlock. Iran will need to press hard.
They come into this game after a largely uninspiring win over Morocco. A stoppage-time own goal was a scruffy way to win but they’ll gladly take it with both hands here.
Saeed Ezatolahi has just completed a suspension and will be available against Spain. The FC Rostov midfielder will most likely start in a line-up with a focus on defending.
Spain have a full squad of players to choose from.
