It wasn’t the smoothest progression but Brazil showed enough flair and class in the group stage to back up their favourites tag at this World Cup. It could be argued that they are the most entertaining side in the competition. They play with a flair and fluidity unmatched by any side to progress to the knockout stages. They’ve been praised for emitting joy through their play but also criticised for all things Neymar-related, including showboating. Rainbow flicks aren’t going to earn a nomination for Sportsman of the Year but they will always be a hit with paying fans.
Much of the positivity about this Mexico team evaporated after they collapsed against Sweden in their final group game. Qualification was likely but not certain so it was a major disappointment to see them crumble under pressure. But could they find things easier against Brazil? The Selecao will attack more, leaving more space for Mexico to exploit with their counter-attacks. Expect an open game to give Mexico opportunities to break.
Brazil’s much-lauded attack has flattered to deceive so far in this tournament. Neymar has shown glimpses of his talent but his game has been blighted by gamesmanship. Gabriel Jesus has allegedly had a worse World Cup statistically than Fred in 2014. But chances are being created so it’s not the greatest cause for concern. One of the chief creators of those chances is Philippe Coutinho, Brazil’s most influential attacker in the competition thus far.
Mexico’s opening victory over Germany was one of their best-ever moments. It was a shock that will go down in history and Mexico were good value for the win, playing superbly. One of the main aspects of the victory that earned them plaudits was that they played without fear. They didn’t shut up shop and invite pressure once they got their goal. They continued to play.
Marcelo went off injured in the win over Serbia but should be fit for this. Douglas Costa probably won’t be able to play against Mexico but may be available for a potential quarter-final.
Mexico have no injury concerns.
