Cheltenham Highlights 2018

Cheltenham 2018 is now consigned to the record books. This was the year the Irish lost a few notable battles, particularly the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup, but truly won the war.

The Prestbury Cup – the accolade awarded to the country which produced the most winners – was a total the mismatch. The Irish had it won after the third day of the Festival. Ultimately the powerhouse stables of Willie Mullins and the Gigginstown / Michael O’Leary backed Gordon Elliott were responsible for 15 of the Festival’s 28 winners alone.

As for riders, remarkably the top five jockeys headed by Davy Russell and Jack Kennedy with four winners apiece, were based in Ireland. The wait for a back-to-back Gold Cup winner goes on, but with this year’s victor aged just 8, he will be at the head of the 2019 Gold Cup betting throughout the summer.

But Buveur D’Air did complete the Champion Hurdle double and he is just 7/2 to do what See You Then and Istabraq did, and complete a memorable hat-trick.

Cheltenham Festival 2019 Match Previews and Betting Tips

Cheltenham Festival 2019 Betting Updates – To Come

Update on 14/3/18

Day 1 of the 2018 Cheltenham Festival provided us with plenty of exciting finishes, with only Footpad coming home in splendid isolation in the Arkle Chase.

The highlight of the first day was seeing Nicky Henderson’s Buveur d’Air defending his Champion Hurdle title with a driving finish up the Cheltenham hill against a spirited Melon to become the first horse since Hardy Eustace in 2005 to win back-to-back Champion Hurdles.

Moving on to Day 2 and Henderson will fancy his chances to win the big race of the day again with Altior who is the 11/10 favourite with Paddy Power to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase at 3.30pm.

Update on 13/3/18 – Apple’s Shakira stands tall as 15 Confirmed for Triumph

A maximum field of 15 runners will head to post for the opening race on Cheltenham Gold Cup Day, Friday 16th of March.

Apple’s Shakira has now won all three of her starts at Cheltenham and long been the market leader for the JCB Triumph Hurdle race.

Some strong names are forming around Nicky Henderson’s filly, including Alan King’s classy Redicean, who is also among the list of confirmations. But Apple’s Shakira is the one they all have to beat here, but what effect will the weather have on the ground? We’ll find out all in the coming days.

Update on 12/3/2018 – Call Me Lord has County Hurdle Option After Imperial Cup Effort

Call Me Lord was very unlucky when going down fighting in Saturday’s Imperial Cup carrying top weight under Daryl Jacob. Nicky Henderson’s charge had it all to do in a highly competitive race on testing ground, but he performed like a good horse.

If he comes out of this assignment in good shape, his Cheltenham odds ranges from 10/1 to 16/1 to follow up in Friday’s County Hurdle race. It would be a fair achievement to make the line up once again and outstanding if he were to make the frame just six days after such a hard race. But he’s in the mix and one to keep an eye on.

Update on 11/3/18 – American Added to Gold Cup Picture

Trainer Harry Fry and connections have stumped up the extra cash to supplement Cotswold Chase runner up and former Hennessy favourite American to the Cheltenham Gold Cup line-up. In view of the forecast rain the game owners fancy a shot at a once in a lifetime race.

Their horse has a bit to find though, reflected by his Gold Cup odds ranging from 25/1 to 40/1, but he is no total back number, and could go well for a long way and has earned his place in the line-up for what is essentially an open renewal of Cheltenham’s blue riband event.

8/3/18 Update – Money for Saint Calvados as ground softens at Cheltenham

Footpad has been at the head of the Arkle Trophy Chase market for the most of the National Hunt season thus far, but the prospect of soft ground on Champion Day next week has seen Harry Whittington’s Saint Calvados come for some really significant market support.

Saint Calvados was trading between 6/1 and 9/1 for the Arkle after his romp in the Kingmaker Chase at Warwick last time our. But he is now no bigger than just 9/2 to find what it takes to gun down the Willie Mullins hot-pot on Day 1 of Cheltenham.

4/3/2018 Update – Confidence grows in Kalashnikov for 2018 Cheltenham Festival opener

The Willie Mullins trained and Rich Ricci owned Getabird is now a top price of 13/8 (2.63) with 888Sport and very solid at the top of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting market.

In recent days however, the Amy Murphy trained Betfair Hurdle winner Kalashikov has hardened in price from 8/1 (8.00) just after Newbury, to a top price of 6/1 with the Betfair Sportsbook.

The exciting novice prospect won a quality renewal of the top handicap last time out and if that outing doesn’t leave it’s mark, Kalashnikov appears to have a big chance of improving again around Prestbury Park.

26/2/2018 Update – Samcro goes for the Ballymore

Samcro has been confirmed for the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at next month’s Cheltenham Festival, removing any speculation that the impressive Deloitte winner could be switched to the shorter Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Samcro was available at even-money for the Ballymore Novices Hurdle last week but has shortened to a shade of odds-on after the race was confirmed as his target, with some bookmakers going as short as 8/13.

The Ballymore news brought about a few swift changes in the Supreme betting odds with Getabird now firm favourite for the Supreme Novice Hurdle at 2/1 ahead of Kalashnikov and If The Cap Fits at 7/1 and 8/1 respectively.

Right on Cue?

Cue Card will run in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup with Paddy Brennan on board if his owner Jean Bishop can exert her influence on the final decision.

Jean Bishop feels the 12-year old, who will be having his 7th run at The Festival with Paddy Brennan on board, deserves a third crack at the Festival showcase, having fallen at the third-last when in contention both times.

Cue Card is into 25/1 from 50/1 for the blue riband event.

19/02/2018 Update – Waiting Patiently the star performer as Cue Card bounces back

The Grade 1 Ascot Chase on Saturday was billed as the race of the season and it lived up to that in no uncertain terms, as Ruth Jefferson’s top class horse Waiting Patiently found a telling burst of speed to put Cue Card in his place, after Colin Tizzard’s amazing twelve-year-old bounced right back to his best under Paddy Brennan.

Waiting Patiently was cut all around for the Ryanair Chase on St. Patrick’s Day Thursday, but his participation depends on soft ground; otherwise he will go to Aintree or Punchestown. Cue Card meanwhile is certain to be kept on the go now after many had thought he was past it. It remains to be seen if the Ryanair or Cheltenham Gold Cup will tempt connections, but whichever one he runs in, he will bring plenty of quality to the race.

13/2/2018 Update – Amy Murphy strikes with Cheltenham bound Kalashnikov

Amy Murphy has developed into a trainer of note in recent years and after underperforming in Grade 1 company at Sandown, her exciting five-year-old Kalashnikov attracted a late surge of money for last Saturday’s Betfair Hurdle at Newbury, a market move the horse justified with a classy performance under regular partner Jack Quinlan.

It was a very good renewal of the top handicap hurdle and this horse really stamped his authority on it, leading all the major Cheltenham Festival bookmakers to cut his price significantly for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle race on Day 1. Both BetBright and Bet Victor are offering top betting odds of 8/1 (9.00) on Kalashnikov to land the Champion Day opener, which is not a bad price.

7/2/2018 Cheltenham Festival Update – Altior out to steal the show in Game Spirit acid test

Trainer Nicky Henderson is quickly gathering an army of top equine talent for the 2018 Cheltenham Festival in March and already, the likes of Santini and On The Blind Side are vying for betting favouritism in their Grade 1 Novice race targets.

But much like Sprinter Sacre before him, ALTIOR is very much the star of the show at Seven Barrows stables and the 2016 Supreme and 2017 Arkle winner bids to get his season under way in the 2.25pm Game Spirit Chase at Newbury on Saturday 10th Feb, a race he is no bigger than odds of 5/6 for, with the Paul Nicholls trained Politologue trading at 11/4 to topple the Queen Mother Champion Chase favourite.

Altior is without a doubt the most exciting horse around at two miles and National Hunt racing and indeed the Cheltenham Festival needs to see the eight-year-old return to the fore on Saturday with a clear round of jumping, and a victory.

Cheltenham Betting Stories and Stats

There has been some phenomenal gambles landed at the Cheltenham Festival – Destriero landing the 1991 Supreme Novices Hurdle and Martin Pipe’s Unsinkable Boxer winning a 1998 handicap immediately spring to mind.

The £1m Stable Lad

But nothing can match the exploits of the intrepid stable-hand who placed an ante-post £50 Cheltenham accumulator on five horses trained by his boss, Nicky Henderson.

Conor Murphy (L), a Cork-born stable lad attached to the Lambourn yard of trainer Nicky Henderson - Cheltenham Festival - Free Bets UK

His selections were Sprinter Sacre (6/1) Simonsig (12/1), Bob’s Worth (6/1), Finian’s Rainbow (8/1) and Riverside Theatre (10/1). Come race week all were considerably shorter in the Cheltenham betting odds and the first two runners, Sprinter Sacre and Simonsig, scored easily.

Bob’s Worth in the RSA Chase and Finian’s Rainbow in Queen Mother Champion Chase had to work harder for their victories but score they did.  It left Henderson’s stable-hand with a sleepless night as he faced a potential of a life-changing win should Riverside Theatre, now a 7/2 favourite, prevail in the Ryanair Chase.

In what must have been a hearts-stopping 5 minutes and 9 seconds, Riverside Theatre jumped two fences slowly, was pushed along at halfway, hit the 13th fence and was under pressure when coming to challenge at the final fence.  Nevertheless he assumed the lead with 50 yards to run and repelled Albertas Run and Medermit by half a length.

The winning bet smashed through the bookmaker’s win limit so it was capped at £1 million which the stable-hand, later announced to be Irishman Conor Murphy, used to relocate to America and set-up as a successful racehorse trainer.

Factory Worker Strikes Lucky

More recently, 12 months ago to be precise, a 67-year-old factory worker from London placed a £1 each-way Lucky 31 on five selections at the final day of the 2017 Festival.

Only four won (Artic Fire, Penhill, Pacha Du Polda and Champagne Classic) and one was unplaced but as those winners were priced 22/1, 14/1, 22/1 and 25/1 respectively, the winnings amounted to £251,382.

Victory for the final selection, Dodging Bullets, which was ironically the shortest priced runner of the five at 12/1, would have taken the punter’s winning to a ceiling £1 million and given him a considerable boost if just placed.  It was pulled-up.

Cheltenham Festival 2019 Ante Post Betting

Over and over again we see one of the best ways to win big is through a series of ante-post Cheltenham bets.

Not only are you likely to get a better price about your selections, new initiatives like ‘Non-Runner No Bet’ (NRNB) and ‘Best Odds Guaranteed’ (BOG) means there are plenty of upsides to placing your Cheltenham bets early.

Forgive and Forget Gamble

There have been some exceptional ante-post gambles landed down the years. In 1983 legendary gambler Barney Curley had a hand in one of the biggest Cheltenham coups of all time by selling a horse by the name of Forgive n’ Forget.

His new trainer Jimmy Fitzgerald made a shrewd purchase too as Forgive n’ Forget was a well handicapped horse.  Subsequently backed at double-digit odds for the Coral Golden Handicap Hurdle (the race is now known as the Pertemps Hurdle) from the moment the weights for the race were made public an avalanche of ante-post bets saw the horse go off as the 5/2 favourite in the 23-runner race which he won pulling proverbial handstands.

The 2019 ante-post markets on the Cheltenham Festival may not have seen such a plunge albeit some punters are lucky enough to have ante-post wagers on Samcro at 14/1 for the Ballymore Novice Hurdle and that horse is now trading at odds-on and is many people’s banker bet of the entire meeting.

Naturally some horses have a number of possible races to run in – Apple’s Jade could run in the Mares or Stayers Hurdle for example.  To give punters a helping hand many online bookmakers are offering ante-post Cheltenham betting markets on individual horses winning any race at the Festival.

Cheltenham Festival Betting Specials

Prestbury Cup Betting

There’s plenty of Cheltenham Festival specials markets to get involved in.

With Ireland producing more winners than the UK at last year’s Festival there is sure to be keen betting interest on the ‘Prestbury Cup’ special market which is the accolade given to the most successful country.

Top Cheltenham Jockey

Irish jockey Ruby Walsh rides 'Un De Sceaux' as they make their way to the parade ring after winning The Ryanair Steeplechase race on the third day of the Cheltenham Festival horse racing - Free Bets UKOne of the most popular betting specials at the Festival is the market on ‘Top Jockey’.  Ruby Walsh has won the award a remarkable nine times in the past ten years.   He also claimed the distinction in 2004 and 2006.

While this record makes the Willie Mullins’ jockey favourite by default, Richard Johnson and Nico de Boinville both look to have a strong book of rides in 2019.

In truth there are always lots of unique ‘betting specials’ during the Cheltenham Festival so keep an eye out for everything from the number of winning favourites to the number of races won by a length or less.

In 2017 you could even place bets on which race, the Arkle Chase or the Queen Mother Champion Chase, would be won in the fastest time.  Plus the race day which would have the longest aggregate winning distances and even the official going description of race 1 on Day one!
